Meet a Maker
beatknit
When did it all begin?
I’ve had to think long and hard about this, I’ve been creating things from yarn and fabric since childhood.Beatknit has probably been on the go for 8years now, with various bursts of creativity but it’s really only been over the past few years that I’ve really started selling my work in shops, galleries and now online.
I went to Art School with the intention of doing Fine Art Printmaking, but as soon as I walked into the Constructed Textile Dept , I realised how much I loved working with yarn and especially knitting and crochet.
Beatknit is really me going back to a source of inspiration with the knowledge and technical experience I’ve picked up over the years working and teaching textiles.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I’m defiantly inspired by shapes, colours and textures found in organic forms, it’s the way they interact with each other. For years now my main inspiration has been plants, flowers and foliage. It’s the combinations that Mother Nature puts together, I love playing about with these and giving them my own interpretation. What is your greatest handmade achievement?
For me one achievement that certainly stands out was being invited onto the Graham Norton Show a few years back with my Knitted Icons book and some of the dolls; it was an experience to say the least. Another achievement was recently meeting an extremely tight work deadline with the help and support of talented crafty friends.Besides making things what do you like to do?
I’m a huge fan of walking, I love getting a stretch of the legs it helps to kick start my day, I live close to a few parks which is perfect. A spot of rummaging around charity shops it’s amazing the things you can find, but at this time of year, having fun with my friends enjoying the summer. How are you enjoying MISI so far?
I’ve really enjoyed being part of MISI so far. I’m always encouraging other Designer /Makers I know to come on board. It’s a fantastic platform for people to showcase their work, and its great being able to chat with like minded creative folk, everybody is very helpful and welcoming.Articles
